Day one of passive income challenge: schedule it out

I am AWFUL with procrastination. Seriously, if I don’t have deadlines reigning me in or specific timeframes in which to finish my tasks, I’m just all over the place, and I get little to nothing done.

So, when I was researching how to write a book and found a tip to plan a writing schedule, I was all over it. That sounds like just what I need to plow through this passive income challenge with successful results, so I’m going to give it a shot. Every weekday afternoon, from 1-3:00, I’m going to focus all of my energy on getting my book written. This also happens to coincide with my daughter’s naptime, so the lack of distraction will help my creativity immensely, I’m sure. 🙂

I also came to this conclusion based on the fact that I feel two hours is about my threshold for time away from other working activities. Plus, I plan to write a chapter each day when I actually get to the writing stage (next week), and I think two hours will be just enough time for me to get my thoughts out on paper (or word processor, as the case will be). Keep in mind that this won’t include editing time, which I plan to tackle at the end of my project.

If you’re following along, think now about how long you think you want your book to be. Will seven chapters be enough? Does 100 pages seem like a satisfactory amount? If you prefer to think in terms of word count, are you aiming for 60,000 words (which would translate into roughly 150 pages, depending on font size/graphics/etc.)? Think about an acceptable length in your mind, and then consider how long you think it will take you to get there. Consider when you want to publish your book. Do you want to get it done within 30 business days (about six calendar weeks), as I’m aiming to do, or would you be happy with a deadline six months from now? That will also help you determine how much time you need to devote each day. Your daily time allowance might be different than mine…maybe you can get it done in an hour each day, or perhaps you want to devote 3 or 4 hours per day to this project.

You will also have to think about what any current time commitments you’re willing to give up to write your book. You’ll have to find time in your day somehow, so maybe you will decide that your housework can take a back burner for a few weeks, or you can DVR your favorite TV shows to catch up on later and work on your writing in the evenings. It can be hard to put things aside, but I’m just trying to remember that while we will need to give something up to reach our goals, this is temporary…in the next month or so, we can go back to our regular routine. And if we create a great book, we may even be able to open up more free time in our schedule, thanks to all of the passive income flowing in. 🙂

Oh, and I forgot to mention this before, but if you follow along and post any of your own questions or comments about your progress, you just might find yourself mentioned in an upcoming book (with a link back to your site, of course). A little free publicity is always nice, isn’t it? 🙂

So how’s about it…care to share your passive income plans? Do you plan to set a daily or weekly schedule for yourself? When would you like to have this project completed? Just click the Comments link below to start spillin’ the beans! 🙂
